By now, most of the Resistance men with whom Thorne had worked were under arrest, and Thorne sat dull dead days in his cell in Helsinki. He was on his good behavior. To Valpo interrogators, he appeared to be cooperating. He talked about his experience in the Resistance, but denied there was any plot to overthrow the government. He learned he was being tried for treason.20

The newspapers were having a heyday. Larry Thorne was still a big name in Finland, and a Gestapo-led plot to infiltrate Finland was a sensational story. The Helsingin Sanomat, the country’s biggest paper, ran headlines on July 25, 1946: “Germany Planned a Landing in Finland.” The innocent-looking face of Larry Thorne stood above another of the paper’s articles, captioned “Germany supported Finland’s Resistance, Weapons and Other Shipments during Winter of 1945.”21
